Does anyone else have strong associations between music and other events or activities in their lives?
For instance I associate Bob Dylan very strongly with school art lessons. We had a wonderful art teacher who always played Dylan albums during our art lessons. Looking back I am not sure whether the music made me love the lessons or the lessons made me love the music or perhaps having such a great teacher who really bucked the trend for the very formal 'talk and chalk' teaching that was almost universal at that time made m love both.
Another memory, also with a Dylan link though not exclusively Dylan, is the sound of a Harmonica. It takes me straight back to my childhood and sitting round a campfire on dark warm, late summer evenings with my parents, sister and cousins while my Uncle played and we listened or sang along.
Would love to hear about the associations any of you have.

I mostly associate music with people--there is a particular country song I associate with a particular neighbor. Some people I associate entire genres with. Some songs I associate with bad feelings, including a lullaby that I had to listen to when I napped once as a toddler. I hated naps, and now I don't like that song--and this was years and years and YEARS and years and years ago.

Funny how a tune can bring back feelings - even forgotten ones in some cases.
My real life job before I retired was working with older people and music was one of the ways you could reach some of them, even when they have quite advanced dementia.

Really? music would retrieve memories? amazing! Yes - I'm sorry that I can't remember more about it or give you some good links but I learned about it many years ago when I was doing a psychiatric module as part of a special course in looking after older people. It is used quite widely in Care Homes but I suspect that it is without the underpinning knowledge to maximise on the effect. I think it is very much along the same lines though as us associating music with events - then it just goes into the subconscious as a linked memory.

I think music can certainly have a very strong effect when it is actually original and it is well composed. Many of the most popular pop artists today pretty much reuse the same riffs and compositions, and you can tell that it all sounds the same.
I tend to associate music with feelings quite often. Songs usually have a certain "feel" to them that you can pick up, and it is definitely quite interesting what can be done with that in a creative artist.

I do enjoy listening to music that plays on my feelings. Good music can sometimes make you go through a series of emotions but generally I just listen to something that fits the mood I'm in rather than the other way around.

I love listening to some good music on long drives especially. It's a great way for me to switch into my introverted mode and just reflect.

My OH used to listen to classical music on long journeys. We have a pretty good radio station for classical music which he mainly had on, though sometimes CDs. He also loved Jazz, think he would have got on well with you George or certainly your dad. Not to sure he would have gone for Amy Winehouse!

I would hum a tune to my wife's pregnant belly - to try to have a familiar tune for the baby when born - I would then hum that tune to the baby to sooth it when crying. It may have worked It was a fun experiment anyway..
