I once heard a music teacher say "a flute is the hardest instrument to pick up, but it gets really easy in later years, once everybody else's instrument is getting hard. And I really have to agree. I struggled all though beginning band, but once the learning curve was over and I knew how to hit the right notes at the right time, there was nothing to it. Except technique. And even flute technique isn't anything like trombone technique--all you really have to worry about is tone and articulation.
In the meantime, a friend of mine, a clarinetist, says things really got hard for her after beginning band. She told me that since clarinet fingerings are more systematic (as opposed to the random fingerings that a flute has that made things so hard in beginning band), so if she had to do some fast fingering and there were notes where she had to move four or five fingers, it was hard for her, because to go from one note to the next, you would usually move one or two fingers.
so flutists, how easy is your instrument compared to others, in your opinion? And was it always that easy?

I think it is interesting that your music teacher said that. My music teacher said the exact opposite. I was told that a flute is easier to pick up than the other instruments. I didn't find it too hard to start playing the flute. What took the most work for me was learning to play really high notes softly, and holding the notes for a long time.

High notes anything softer than mezzopiano are a big challenge for me. I like to play loud-ish. Maybe the flute learning curves come at different times than other instruments--in the beginning it is hard to memorize fingerings, than later when you start doing more advanced music, there is a second learning curve.
